The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) is South Africa’s equivalent of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), bringing SA into line with international standards.
The goal of POPIA is to protect data subjects from security breaches, theft, and discrimination. It also provides South Africans with rights regarding unsolicited electronic communications.
All medical and healthcare practitioners are required to be compliant with POPIA by 1 July 2021.
Failure to comply with POPIA can result in the imposition of a fine (maximum R10m) or a term of imprisonment (maximum of 10 years).
Don’t get caught out, FDM makes the POPIA compliance process easy.
